Though not used extensively outside of journalism, Freedom of Information requests provide a useful way to obtain information on the activities of government bodies and public institutions. Crucial tools for transparency and accountability, these requests have great potential to support the work of those promoting the social good.

This free, half-day workshop with Dr Sarah Steele will build on our previous webinar on FOI to provide a space for those working for the public good to draw on the experience of those who have used these requests widely.

Using examples from past projects and collaborations, researchers, charities, and public accountability experts will share their experiences, ideas, failures, and successes with FOI to help those who have rarely or never used these requests consider how they might use them in the future. We will also learn about public repositories and platforms like WhatDoTheyKnow and AskTheEU, and explore what options there are for harnessing existing resources in the UK and around the world.

This workshop will be a great opportunity for local and national organisations, charities, and interested individuals to engage with researchers, experts and organisations with extensive experience in using Freedom of Information requests to promote the public interest.
