Jesus College launches first Sustainable Transport Strategy

Jesus College has announced its first Sustainable Transport Strategy, which encourages all College members, staff and visitors to employ low-carbon transport methods and outlines a series of measures to facilitate this.

Following the launch of its Sustainability Strategy, Responsible Investment Policy, Decarbonisation report and Sustainability A-Z, the wide-ranging Transport Strategy includes a range of initiatives designed to encourage students, academics, staff, and visitors to use more sustainable modes of transport. Measures include:

  • Improving support and provisions for those using active travel, public transport, car-sharing and electric vehicles
  • Expanding the storage offer for student belongings between terms to enable students to travel to and from College using low-carbon methods
  • Continuing to improve facilities and hybrid meeting options to reduce the travel required for College and University business
  • Revising rules for travel on College business and guidance for all College schemes funding student and academic travel to encourage the use of sustainable modes of transport.

Ms Sonita Alleyne, Master of Jesus College, said:

“We are proud to be launching our new Sustainable Transport Strategy, which is an important part of our wider commitment to sustainability. A successful Transport Strategy will not only result in the College reducing its carbon emissions and enabling cohorts of students to be effective agents for change elsewhere, but will also attract students, Fellows and staff who value the provisions and facilities provided as a result. The College is already in a good place when it comes to sustainable travel and I look forward to seeing further progress made over coming years.”

Professor Christopher Marquis, Chair of the Environment Committee, said: “The expansion of the University and the high cost of housing in the area means that the need for sustainable transport is growing. This comprehensive strategy analyses our current position and makes pragmatic recommendations for changes needed to improve upon our already-strong starting point.”
