Postdoctoral Associate
University Positions
Wellcome Early-Career Fellow
Specialising in
Statistics, computational biology, genetics, and epidemiology

Xilin Jiang is a statistical geneticist working on understanding the molecular architecture (DNA, RNA, proteomics, metabolomics) of health outcomes (disease, treatment response, comorbidity).

Academic interests

Xilin Jiang’s academic interests include:

  • Translational research of genomic technology; specifically, developing genetic score platforms for the NHS
  • The interaction between genetics and environment
  • Integration of multi-omic data (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomic)
  • Causal inference using genetics as instruments
  • Data mining from electronic health records (comorbidities, disease outcomes, treatment response)
  • Methodology for efficient inference to address challenges when moving to population scale data (eg 60 million e-records, 5 million genotype data).

Degrees obtained

  • BSc, Fudan University.
  • DPhil, Oxford University.

Awards and prizes

  • Wellcome Early-Career Award (2023-2028).
  • British Heart Foundation Career Development Fellowship (2022-2023).
  • Rhodes Scholarship (China and University, 2017).
  • Wellcome Trust studentship, Genomic Medicine and Statistics (2017-2022).
  • National Scholarship, 2014 and 2015 (People’s Republic of China).

Biography

Xilin is particularly interested in how additional data modality could enhance our current understanding of diseases, and is broadly interested in two themes of research:

  • Methodology development: developing statistical methods to understand the molecular architecture (DNA, RNA, proteomics, metabolomics) of health outcomes (disease, treatment responses, comorbidity). In statistical terminology, Xilin works on dimension reduction, longitudinal analysis, efficient inference methods, and causal inference.
  • Translational research: collaborating with the NHS to develop tools and resources for computing risk scores using polygenic models, protein/metabolite levels, and e-health records. Xilin works closely with clinical teams to investigate potential applications including clinical trials, treatment response prediction, and risk stratification.

Xilin’s research is funded by a Wellcome Early-Career award (PI). Xilin has a primary affiliation at Cambridge University and a secondary affiliation at Harvard School of Public Health. The research program is sponsored by Professor Mike Inouye and Professor John Danesh at Cambridge University, and Professor Alkes Price at Harvard School of Public health.

Previously, Xilin held a one-year transition British Heart Foundation Career Development Fellowship (2022-2023). Xilin got a DPhil in Genomic Medicine and Statistics from Oxford University, funded by a Rhodes Scholarship and a Wellcome Trust studentship, and received a BSc from Fudan University with an overall top GPA. Xilin has experience in other computational biology topics, including infectious diseases (as a consultant to the Gates Foundation and China CDC on COVID response) and computational neuroscience (as an undergraduate researcher with Professor Thomas Yeo and Professor David Heeger).

Other interests

Distance running, triathlons with very slow swimming, and cooking.

When applying to Cambridge colleges it can feel a bit overwhelming as there are so many to choose from. I applied to Jesus College because it has a large MCR which was important for me because I wanted to feel part of a community. Now that I’m doing my PhD here, I’m very glad I did choose a college with a large postgraduate community. Throughout the year there are lots of postgraduate events, including formal dinners, special formals at Christmas and Easter, bops in the bar and film nights in...

Jesus College has all the benefits of being large, historical and prestigious college, whilst also retaining fantastic welfare: the staff and other students all care about each other, and will be there to cheer you on when you are thriving, but also there to support you if you need any help. I chose Jesus due to several reasons, including its prime location, where it is very central, and easy to access everywhere, even if you work in one of the institutes further out. I also selected Jesus for its MCR...

Jesus College has been at the heart of my Cambridge experience. I chose the College because I was impressed by its distinctive blend of academic rigour and extracurricular achievement. A College for all-rounders, Jesus is a lively and rewarding place to study. I couldn’t be happier here! Friendly and engaged, the Jesus postgraduate community never ceases to impress me. At ease with themselves and forever curious, my peers go out of their way to cultivate a sense of camaraderie. After a day of leafing through old manuscripts at the National...

There are many reasons why I’m so happy to be a part of Jesus College. The three biggest reasons for me are the opportunities to be involved in College sport, the support the College provides for me with for my research and the help in making sure that we have comfortable, affordable accommodation when we have needed it. Jesus College is so friendly and so it is incredibly easy to get involved in the sport and social side of the College. The MCR does a great job in welcoming new...

It is a well-accepted opinion in Cambridge that Jesus College is the best college and no other college even comes a distant second. Its sports grounds are enormous, its buildings are mesmerising, its libraries are rich, its chapel is the oldest, its accommodation is the best value for money, its international community is diverse, its religious circles are the most welcoming, and its members are the smartest, kindest and the friendliest. It is one of the central colleges that aims to offer three years accommodation to postgraduates, and has comparatively...
