Winners of 2023 Jesus College Hadfield Composition Competition for young composers announced

Thanks to the ongoing generosity of Mr Max Hadfield (1961), we’re delighted to announce the winners of the Hadfield Composition Prize for this academic year.

Winning entry for the Grace category with a setting of Oculi omnium - Manav Paul

Winning entry for the Anthem category with a setting of Source and fount of all creation - Dónal McCann

In Michaelmas Term, we invited entries from young, emerging composers for two prizes – one for the composition of a new anthem for the College Choir, and one of new settings of the Jesus College Grace to be sung at major feasts and dinners. The competition was judged by Benjamin Sheen (Director of Music) and Cheryl Frances-Hoad (composer).

The premiere performance of Oculi omnium, a setting of words from Psalm 145:15-16 used in the College Grace, will take place in the Chapel on Sunday 25 February during Choral Evensong at 6.00pm. Source and fount of all creation, which adapts words from a poem by former Dean of Durham Cathedral and Dean of Jesus College Peter Baelz, will be premiered on Sunday 3 March at Choral Evensong at 6.00pm in Chapel.

Both services will be streamed live and can be watched online via the Choir’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/jesuschoircambridge).
