New studentships for climate science research
Jesus College and Cambridge Zero are launching a pioneering PhD studentship.
Philanthropic support from alumnus James Marshall (Jesus 1986) will create opportunities for talented researchers whose ideas aim to aid the global response to the climate crisis.
The PhD candidates will be recommended by the Schools of Technology and Physical Sciences, in partnership with Cambridge Zero, and hosted by Jesus College.
“I am incredibly grateful to our forward-thinking alum James Marshall, whose investment in this studentship will achieve change far beyond our campus,” said Sonita Alleyne, the Master of Jesus College.
Cambridge Zero is the University of Cambridge’s climate initiative which aims to generate ideas and innovations to help shape a sustainable future towards achieving a resilient zero-carbon world.

The PhD studentship is an innovative interdisciplinary collaboration to develop sustainable solutions for the planet, society and the economy.
James Marshall said: “It is my firm belief that through interdisciplinary collaboration and cutting-edge research, we can find sustainable solutions that benefit not only the environment but also society and the economy. We need to be more aggressive in trying out and implementing these solutions at scale and I am looking forward to seeing the impact this work can achieve.”
Jesus College is recognised for its commitment to catalysing behavioural change through its Sustainability Strategy, with ambitious goals for 2030, and continually seeks new ways to play its part in addressing the climate emergency.
Sonita said: “Transitioning to renewable energy sources, reducing waste to landfill, and ensuring responsible investment are essential components of the College’s commitment to a greener future. We must all take action to mitigate our already-warming world, and the strength of the academic community at Cambridge is well-placed to deliver ground-breaking research solutions to the climate crisis.”
