Jesuans in Uganda - A Royal African Engagement

The 31st July 2018 saw a chance equatorial meeting of two Jesuans for the Silver Jubilee of HRH Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, King of Buganda.

David Maxwell (1970) was a former school mate of The Kabaka at King’s Mead School in Sussex, whilst both parents of Ssegawa-Ssekintu Kiwanuka (2005) were born in Kampala and are Baganda (Buganda Kingdom is the largest of the four kingdoms of Uganda). The guest of honour at the festivities held at the Mmengo Palace, Kampala, was HRH Otumfour Nana Osei Tutu II, the King of Ashanti who had flown in from Ghana, adding even more tradition to this traditional Royal African occasion and unique moment of modern history.

Both David and Ssegawa-Ssekintu represented Cambridge University as Full Blues (Rowing and Boxing respectively); however, David also has the incredible honour of being an Olympic medal-winning Jesuan, having rowed in the 1972 Munich Olympics whilst still at College and then winning Silver in the Men’s Eight at the Montreal Olympics of 1976.
