How to use Freedom of Information for the social good

Freedom of Information (FOI) has emerged around the world as a tool for openness and transparency. From cycle campaigns seeking to understand planning decisions to researchers interested in public consultations on nutrition guidance, examples of the uses of FOI are numerous.

In this one-hour discussion, experts explored how community organisations and the public can leverage FOIs to foster transparency, accountability, and benefits for wider society. Sharing lessons from their experience, Dr Sarah Steele (University of Cambridge) and collaborator Gary Ruskin (USRTK) joined Campaign for Freedom of Information's Director, Maurice Frankel, to discuss their decades of experience around FOI in the UK and USA.

Funded by the University of Cambridge and hosted in conjunction with the Intellectual Forum at Jesus College, this panel discussion was an exciting exploration of the potential of FOI for individuals and community organisations. Attendees learned about how they can utilise FOI for the social good, about the ways to use FOI responsibly, and about the challenges they may face and potential solutions to overcome these hurdles.

About the speakers

Maurice Frankel (Director, Campaign for Freedom of Information) has tirelessly campaigned for freedom of information in the UK and has seen first-hand how the power of FOI can bring about tangible social change. His remarkable understanding of FOI provided attendees with unique insights into its application at the grassroots level.

Gary Ruskin is Co-founder and Executive Director of U.S. Right to Know (USRTK). He has conducted extensive FOI in the USA, UK and beyond to ensure transparency in the food, chemical and agricultural industries. His expertise lies in promoting corporate accountability, emphasising the role of FOI in demystifying corporate practices and decision-making.

Sarah Steele, who conducted extensive FOI research while a Senior Research Associate in Cambridge Public Health, has used the tool to explore health systems, policy application in healthcare, violence prevention activities in the public sector and food systems. She has sent 100s of FOIs and worked with various press outlets with a view to improve health equity.

The session was chaired by IF Director Julian Huppert. Julian is also a Director of the Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust Ltd, which since 1904 has funded campaigns to speak truth to power, including supporting the Campaign for Freedom of Information.
