Boat Race clean sweep for Cambridge

Congratulations to Paula Wesselmann (2017) and Spencer Furey (2017), both part of the winning crews at the Cancer Research UK Boat Race against the University of Oxford.

Both Paula and Spencer arrived at Jesus last year with impressive rowing CVs, including College rowing experience from their time studying in the United States.

Paula, who is studying for an MPhil in Machine Learning, Speech and Language Technology, adds her Boat Race win to one silver and two bronze medals from German Rowing Championships between 2009 and 2011.

Spencer, a student of American History, fulfils his goal of competing in and winning the Boat Race after watching the historic competition for the first time in 2014: “I have an obsessive personality, and when I watched the race and saw how much tradition and work goes into it, I made it a goal. It’s the pinnacle of amateur scholar athletics.”

Not only did Cambridge crews win both  main races, they also excelled in both reserve races, making the 2018 Boat Race a clean sweep for the Light Blues. Congratulations to each rower and to the coaching and support teams behind them for a magnificent result.
