Dr Kate Maltby

Kate is an Intellectual Forum Senior Research Associate.

Dr Kate Maltby is a widely-published political writer, arts critic and campaigner who combines her public-facing work with academic research into Elizabethan literature and intellectual history.

Kate recently obtained her PhD without corrections from University College London, with a project that examined the competing role of humanist tropes and classical wisdom imagery in the representation and self-representation in Elizabeth I. Her work at the Intellectual Forum will focus on the development of this work into a monograph, including research in the archives of the University of Cambridge concerning Queen Elizabeth’s visit to the University in 1564.

In her alternate career as a journalist, Kate writes a fortnightly column for the i newspaper, a monthly theatre column for The Stage, and a monthly theatre essay for Prospect magazine. She also regularly features as a columnist, essayist and reviewer in newspapers including the Financial Times, The Guardian and The Sunday Times, and is a frequent voice on the BBC. She is the current Chair of the Critics’ Circle, representing the UK’s theatre critics, and Deputy Chair of the charity Index on Censorship.
