Director of Music

Applications are invited for the post of Director of Music and Fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge.

Jesus College is set in beautiful surroundings in the centre of Cambridge, and is home to an exceptional musical tradition. We are celebrated for our choral excellence, with two choirs, the Chapel choir, which is made up of boy choristers and undergraduate men, and the College choir in which women students sing with the men.  The Chapel is highly regarded for its acoustics, enviable collection of keyboard instruments and busy programme of services and concerts. The ideal candidate will build on our reputation, whilst contributing significantly to the College’s broader musical life.

Your remit will span all aspects of recruitment and training, defining the repertoire and ensuring consistency of performance, and you will conduct effective outreach with local schools and the community. To join us, you should bring an excellent record in directing sacred music, backed by impressive interpersonal, organisational, and pastoral abilities, as well as experience as an organist or relevant keyboard skills for the direction of rehearsals from the piano and the mentoring of the organ scholars. An understanding of the academic objectives of the College and its students is also important.

You should have the creativity, enthusiasm and vision to develop the College’s growing profile across a wide spectrum of musical performance, including the ability to motivate student singers and instrumentalists and to encourage collaborations with other musicians at every level in order to promote the highest standards of performance. Employment at Jesus College will offer you the opportunity to join a prestigious and historic Cambridge College.

In addition to a stipend in the range of £37,768 to £50,702, other benefits include rent-free accommodation, dining-rights, a pension scheme, a healthcare cash scheme, a childcare voucher scheme and an opportunity for international travel with the Choir.

The College is an equal opportunities employer, and encourages wide diversity.

The CPDA position will normally be tenable for a period of three years. Applications from candidates with guaranteed funding that ends before 30 September 2018 will not normally be considered. No stipend or honorarium is payable; no room or accommodation provided. The dining rights of CPDAs are one free meal per week (lunch or dinner) with additional meals and guests at the CPDA’s expense; CPDAs are also invited to a number of College events.
