College Teaching Associate (English)

Jesus College is seeking to appoint a College Teaching Associate in English and Bye Fellow for a fixed term of 12 months from 1 September 2023 to 31 August 2024.

Applications are invited from scholars with teaching interests and research expertise in sixteenth- or seventeenth-century English studies. This may be a valuable opportunity for an individual at the early stages of their academic career to allow them to build teaching skills and other academic and college experience.

The position would, ideally, suit someone at postdoctoral level and would have a weekly teaching requirement of 12 hours (primarily for Jesus College students, but also or reciprocally for other Colleges). The College is seeking a candidate who can teach compulsory Part I period papers, optional Part II papers, and dissertations within their expertise.

While the successful appointee would be welcome to make use of University vacations to pursue their research, there would be no research-related requirement attaching to this post. Prior experience of teaching undergraduates in relevant areas is desirable. Expertise in some area of English literature between 1500 and 1700 is essential. The stipend attaching to the College Teaching Associateship is £30,619 p.a. (point 36 on the University of Cambridge scale).

Interviews will take place in-person at Jesus College in Cambridge on Monday 26th June 2023. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to give a 30-minute presentation to a non-specialist audience aimed at introducing undergraduate English students to a new topic of literary studies to be selected by the candidate. Shortlisted candidates will also have a formal interview with a selection panel comprised from members of the College Fellowship, including those from the English subject area.

References

Candidates should provide the names and contact details of two academic referees, who will be contacted in the event of shortlisting. Please prepare reference letters in advance of the shortlisting (by Friday 16th June).

Further information

The successful appointee will also be expected to be involved in undergraduate admissions interviews in English in December 2023 for prospective undergraduate students and also to participate in recruitment and outreach activities related to English in particular: e.g., hosting information sessions at College Open Days.

The successful appointee will be elected to a Bye Fellowship, to run coterminously with the fixed-term appointment as College Teaching Associate. As a Bye Fellow, they will be entitled to generous dining rights. It is anticipated that the successful appointee will be offered exclusive or shared use of an office on the College’s Central Site.
