Sophie Tobin is a Bye-Fellow in Mathematics and a Research Associate in the Department of Earth Sciences. Her research focuses on mathematical models of physical processes at the Earth’s surface.
Academic interests
Sophie Tobin’s academic interests include:
- Low Reynolds number flows
- Non-Newtonian fluid dynamics
- Glaciology.
Degrees obtained
- MA, Cantab.
- MMath, Cantab.
- PhD, Cantab.
Biography
Sophie completed her undergraduate degree in maths at Jesus. After Part III, she went on to do a PhD in Applied Mathematics before starting a postdoc in Earth Sciences. Her research focusses on mathematical models of geophysical processes. She is particularly interested in approaches that allow us to gain insight into these complex models either entirely ‘by hand’ or with minimal use of computational resources.
Since 2019, Sophie has supervised various first- and second-year maths courses at Jesus.
Other interests
Board games, walking.
