Biography

Juliet Mitchell's work has revealed the importance of siblings and the neglect of a horizontal paradigm in contrast to the dominant vertical parent-child relationship in the social and psychological sciences.

Professor Mitchell is currently writing two books on the basis of her research as an Emeritus Leverhulme Fellow (2013-15): a study of Shakespeare, siblings, and lateral relations, and a theoretical exploration of the role of trauma and the ‘law of the mother’ in sibling relations.

She is Professorial Research Associate at the UCL Psychoanalysis Unit, where she directed the PhD programme in ‘Theoretical Psychoanalysis’. Recently she was Visiting Mellon Fellow at the University of Witswatersrand, SA, and Andrew W. Mellon Visiting Professor at the Courtauld Institute of Fine Art and Visiting Professor for the Council of the Humanities, Princeton University.

She is also the Founder Director of the Centre for Gender Studies at the University of Cambridge and an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Human Geography, University of Cambridge and Fellow Emeritus of Jesus College, Cambridge, and Emeritus Professor, University of Cambridge. She is a Fellow of the British and International Psychoanalytical Societies and a Fellow of the British Academy.
