Giuliana is an explorer. During her career she has investigated how light interacts with matter focusing on different applications such as optoelectronic nanosystems, quantum optics, quantum plasmonics, and solar cells.

Biography

Her experience in the fields of plasmonics, high precision experimental nanophotonics, and quantum optics covers both applied and fundamental aspects.

Her research career started already during her bachelor thesis work which led to the understanding of light absorption and electrical transport in Si:O alloys for photovoltaics (J. of Appl. Phys. 108). Her visit to Prof Luca Dal Negro in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Boston University led to her early investigations exploring plasmon enhanced light harvesting for solar devices (Optics Express, 20, S3, A418).

During her PhD, completed in 2014 in the group of Prof Stefan Maier, Imperial College London, she pioneered the quantum optics of plasmonics, demonstrating for the first time the bosonic nature of plasmons (Phys. Rev. Appl. 1, 034004) and proved the preservation of quantum nature in lossy plasmonic systems (Nano Lett. 12, 2504).

She has also been involved in studying the directionality of plasmonic scattering (ACS Nano 8, 8232; Nano Lett. 13, 3843; Optics Express 20, 4893). Her recognition on an international scale in the quantum plasmonic community led to the publication of an invited book chapter for Springer (Reviews in Plasmonics, 2015).

She is currently interested in engineering nano devices for advanced information technologies, exploiting nano assembly, and optoelectronic nano systems (Nano Lett. 15, 7452; Small, 12, 1334) in the group of Prof J. Baumberg in Cambridge.
