Madeleine Arnot is Emeritus Professor of Sociology of Education and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.

Biography

She began her career at the Open University in 1975 (under the name MacDonald) focussing specifically on social class issues. She developed theories of gender codes and schooling focusing on the history of coeducation, the curriculum, family and schooling, youth cultures and identities which were published in Reproducing Gender? Essays on educational theory and feminist politics. In 2000 she also explored what pupils say about learning in primary and secondary schools.

In the l990s, she researched gender and citizenship issues in Europe, focusing on student teachers' political awareness in Greece, Spain, Portugal, and England and Wales. She contributed to the international Steering Group for UNESCO Education for All: Gender Monitoring Project, and joined the UNGEI expert panel on Girls' Rights, Gender Equality and Education.

In 2005 she led the five year empirical research project Youth, Gender and Citizenship in India, Kenya, Ghana, and Pakistan,. She has published Educating the Gendered Citizen along with a sequence of policy briefs and research articles on the project. She is a member of the editorial board of International Studies in Sociology of Education and editor of the Routledge series on Education, Poverty and International Development.

In 2004, she established the Research Consortium on the Education for Asylum-Seeker and Refugee Children, jointly publishing Education, Asylum and the 'Non-Citizen' Child: the politics of compassion and belonging. She jointly edited Education, Mobilities and Migration: people, ideas and resources and led the Bell Foundation project on School Approaches to the education of EAL students: language development, social integration and achievement (2014) and co-authored the second report entitled Language Development and School Acheivement: opportunities and challenges in the education of EAL students.

In 2008, she was awarded a honorary doctorate by the University of Uppsala, Sweden for her contribution to democratic education. In 2013 she co-founded, with Professor Loraine Gelsthorpe, the Cambridge Migration Research Network and is involved in setting up a cross-discriplinary Centre for the Study of Global Human Movement.  In 2016 she was invited by the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences and by the University of Cologne and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology  to offer expert advice on the integration of newly arrived children. She is currently writing a book on Moralities and Mobilities: the educational challenge.
