Careers events 2023-24

We run a range of Careers and Mentoring events throughout the year, including our annual speed networking event where students meet with alumni from a wide range of sectors and professions.

Last year our 'In the Business of...' series explored diverse realms, from Artificial Intelligence with guest speaker Nick Chatrath, author of Leading in the age of AI and Senior Research Associate at the Intellectual Forum, to placemaking, where students discovered the secrets behind successful placemaking projects and heard from industry experts with a passion for transforming spaces. These events offered valuable insights into evolving industries.

Our event on Foreign Policy and Civil Service, featuring James Kariuki (1989), UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, drew a sold-out crowd. The Civil Service remains a popular destination for our graduates, so we repeated our In the Business of Civil Service Panel event and introduced a new panel event in the Business of Journalism. The Rt Hon Andrew Mitchell MP (1975) also appeared with a number of other alumni from across the political spectrum for In the Business of Politics panel.

We were delighted to welcome Tim Campbell from BBC One's The Apprentice for In the Business of Entrepreneurship; you can watch Tim’s top tip’s for aspiring entrepreneurs here

Fiona Campbell (1998), BBC Three Controller, caught up with Isabella Dowden from Varsity on the channel’s search for the next smash hit. We were delighted to welcome Fiona back to College for In the Business of...Broadcasting, watch Fiona’s top three tips for students looking to start out in the broadcasting industry.

Students benefitted from interactive sessions such as How to Pick a Career in collaboration with the University Careers Services, and a CV review pop-up clinic which gave practical support in navigating their career paths.

Student-led events

Former JCSU Vice President Esther Anthony-Ajileye (2021) organised an event with John Bercow, the former MP and Speaker of the House of Commons. He spoke to current students about his fascinating career in advance of his sold-out talk at the Intellectual Forum. Esther was also the JCSU representative for the College's Careers Committee and organised a very successful peer to peer event on internships in Michaelmas 2023. We would also like to thank our participating students who spoke so informatively about interning in sectors as diverse as biochemistry and technology, real estate, consulting, PR and communications, and FinTech.

When applying to Cambridge colleges it can feel a bit overwhelming as there are so many to choose from. I applied to Jesus College because it has a large MCR which was important for me because I wanted to feel part of a community. Now that I’m doing my PhD here, I’m very glad I did choose a college with a large postgraduate community. Throughout the year there are lots of postgraduate events, including formal dinners, special formals at Christmas and Easter, bops in the bar and film nights in...

It is a well-accepted opinion in Cambridge that Jesus College is the best college and no other college even comes a distant second. Its sports grounds are enormous, its buildings are mesmerising, its libraries are rich, its chapel is the oldest, its accommodation is the best value for money, its international community is diverse, its religious circles are the most welcoming, and its members are the smartest, kindest and the friendliest. It is one of the central colleges that aims to offer three years accommodation to postgraduates, and has comparatively...

Jesus College, my home. I am truly grateful to be able to call Jesus College my second home. It was my preferred option when I first applied for my MPhil and I could not be happier to still be here during my PhD! There are many reasons why Jesus stands out from the other colleges: from its fantastic facilities to its glorious formal dinners and to its wonderful café and brewery room. The Quincentenary Library is a lovely place to study. It has many spaces to choose from and everything...

There are many reasons why I’m so happy to be a part of Jesus College. The three biggest reasons for me are the opportunities to be involved in College sport, the support the College provides for me with for my research and the help in making sure that we have comfortable, affordable accommodation when we have needed it. Jesus College is so friendly and so it is incredibly easy to get involved in the sport and social side of the College. The MCR does a great job in welcoming new...

I chose Cambridge for my PGCE as it’s the leading UK institution for teacher training and Education, with an exciting, research-dominated, cutting edge course. The staff are welcoming and approachable, and make studying here an absolute joy. I’ve already completed one of my three primary school placements, in a reception class in a school just outside Cambridge, and am due to start the next one soon. I chose Jesus because of its reputation as a sporty College, but the proximity to the city centre is a big bonus. Jesus also...
