Information for Supervisors

Thank you for supervising students at Jesus College. The College is grateful to our supervisors for their efforts in this aspect of Cambridge teaching and learning. So are our students, who are hugely appreciative of those who teach them.

This document supplements the intercollegiate guidance regarding supervisions and provides College-specific details that may be useful to you. Please do not hesitate to contact the College if anything is unclear or if you have particular questions. The Tutorial office will do its best to answer quickly and clearly.

Undergraduate supervision reports and payment claims are submitted via CamCORS. For issues with the CamCORS system, please contact CamCORS help.

A guide for supervisors is available online from Intercollegiate services.

Applying to be a supervisor

Supervisors need to apply to be registered on CamCORS. Applications are reviewed and approved if all is satisfactory by the Tutorial Office.

Please make sure that you do not submit claims without the correct payment option. If you do not have the correct payment option available, Intercollegiate services can help you find out what to do.

Please ensure that you include your IBAN numbers with your bank account details if you are applying to be paid directly to your bank account via BACS.

Student visa holders

Student visa holders must not be self-employed and therefore need to be added to the College pay roll to be paid monthly via a pay slip (not directly by BACS). This is a Home Office condition of these visa types. To be added to payroll each academic year, students must complete the Jesus College student or tier 4 employment survey, which will start the process of a Temporary Worker’s Agreement being produced for you by Tutorial. You will need one of these if you are a student member of Jesus College, even if you are undertaking supervisions for other Colleges. If you have any questions, please contact the Senior Postgraduate Administrator, Dr Vanessa Bowman. Student or tier 4 visa-holders will be paid via the College payroll in the next month after the payment dates listed below, once their employment paperwork is in place.

Safeguarding

Details of the College’s procedures and policies on safeguarding is available on the College website. These policy documents can supplement the general safeguarding guidance given to all supervisors but are not intended to impose any further requirements on you as a supervisor.

Serious academic, pastoral and welfare issues

If you have serious pastoral or academic concerns please alert the College immediately. We appreciate the role that our supervisors play in supporting students, but we do not expect you to become pastoral advisors to students. Your role is an academic one. Please refer all such matters to us rather than seeking to deal with them yourself.

There are many reasons why I’m so happy to be a part of Jesus College. The three biggest reasons for me are the opportunities to be involved in College sport, the support the College provides for me with for my research and the help in making sure that we have comfortable, affordable accommodation when we have needed it. Jesus College is so friendly and so it is incredibly easy to get involved in the sport and social side of the College. The MCR does a great job in welcoming new...

I chose Jesus College because of the great mixture of undergraduates and postgraduates, and when I first visited I thought it was the most beautiful place I had ever seen! The sense of community in Jesus has had an enormous impact on my experience here. Whether you need help, advice, cheering up or even just a chat there is always someone there to put a smile on your face. From the MCR committee to the Porters, the canteen staff to the gardeners, everyone is so friendly and welcoming. Jesus also...

It is a well-accepted opinion in Cambridge that Jesus College is the best college and no other college even comes a distant second. Its sports grounds are enormous, its buildings are mesmerising, its libraries are rich, its chapel is the oldest, its accommodation is the best value for money, its international community is diverse, its religious circles are the most welcoming, and its members are the smartest, kindest and the friendliest. It is one of the central colleges that aims to offer three years accommodation to postgraduates, and has comparatively...

Jesus College, my home. I am truly grateful to be able to call Jesus College my second home. It was my preferred option when I first applied for my MPhil and I could not be happier to still be here during my PhD! There are many reasons why Jesus stands out from the other colleges: from its fantastic facilities to its glorious formal dinners and to its wonderful café and brewery room. The Quincentenary Library is a lovely place to study. It has many spaces to choose from and everything...

Jesus College is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and historical colleges at Cambridge! It is also, in my opinion, one of the most supportive colleges: from wellbeing to the porters there is always someone to ask for advice, support, or to talk through your stress. I chose Jesus for many reasons. Firstly, it’s right in the heart of the city centre which is amazing not only for that quick top-up shop but also to explore the beautiful city of Cambridge even while busy (it’s so easy to go for...
