Students triumph in athletics competition

Congratulations to Jesus College’s athletics teams, which won the men’s inter-Collegiate athletics competition and came a close second in the women’s competition last Saturday (20 October).

This is the eighth win for the College since 1911 when the competition was founded. The men’s team collected 258 points to win the Rouse-Ball bowl trophy, with St John’s coming a distant second on 161 points. The women’s team collected 106 points, coming in second place to Murray Edwards on 118 points.

Ollie Brown (2015) not only won Long Jump with a new personal best of 6.11m, but he also competed in seven events. His personal score of 75 points would have placed him fourth overall in the Collegiate competition.

Cara James (2017), Jesus’s Athletics Captain, is only the fourth woman to have her name engraved on the Rouse-Ball bowl trophy.

Cara said: “Winning Cuppers and having our name on the trophy for only the eighth time since the competition started in 1911 is a real achievement. Hopefully it will highlight the hard work of individuals at Jesus College who compete for the University and also the incredible team spirit that we possess.

“Many people competed in events that they aren’t familiar with in order to help the overall team to victory. Personally I feel it has been a great privilege to compete alongside the many talented sportsmen and women of Jesus College, and it will be a great source of pride to me to be able to have my name on the Rouse-Ball Bowl trophy as Captain, especially being only the fourth woman since the competition began to achieve that honour.”
