Sculpture in the Close 1996

The Master, Fellows and Scholars of Jesus College wish to express their gratitude to the sculptors whose generosity in lending their work for the College’s “Sculpture in the Close” exhibition makes possible one of the principal celebrations for our Quincentenary. This is the fifth biennial exhibition which we have held, and we are particularly delighted that every one of the sculptors who has exhibited with us in previous shows has agreed to do so again on this occasion.

The Works of Art Committee of the College, led by the Curator Bill Stronge, has been responsible for organising and installing the exhibition. Members of the Committee who have been involved are Jim Roseblade (posters), James Crawford and Charlotte Grant (publicity), Neil Brodie (catalogue), Roberto Cipolla (photography), and the Domestic Bursar, Nigel Lacey. The practical assistance of the Head Gardener, Paul Stearn, and his staff are greatly appreciated. In addition to the artists themselves thanks are due to a number of galleries for their assistance: to Lorcan O’Neill of Anthony d’Offay in relation to Richard Long, to Tom Lighton of the Waddington Galleries in relation to Barry Flanagan and William Turnbull, to Clive Adams for Peter Randall-Page, and to Kapil Jariwala for Lucy Swan.

The College wishes to acknowledge the generosity of the principal sponsors of the exhibition: the Sun Alliance International Insurance Group and Barclays Bank plc. We are very grateful also to Barkers, Bidwells Chartered Surveyors, Cazenove and Co, the Coulson Group Ltd, Rattee and Kett, and C.W.G. Taylor for their generous support.

The Exhibition was open daily from 11.00 am to 8.00 pm from Sunday 22nd September to Tuesday 29th October without admission charge.
