The Cambridge University Course

There are three courses in Engineering at Cambridge. All last four years and, at the end of the fourth year, lead to the degrees BA and MEng. Two of the courses are taught by the Department of Engineering; the third is taught by the Department of Chemical Engineering, which is a separate unit. The following information refers of those courses taught by the Department of Engineering; information about Chemical Engineering can be found on a separate leaflet.

All students reading Engineering follow the same course for the first two years (the Engineering Tripos Parts 1A and 1B). This covers all the main branches of engineering at a fundamental level with the aim of giving students a wide general knowledge of engineering.

From the third year students concentrate on their chosen branch of engineering and the course divides into two:

  • The Engineering Tripos Parts 2A and 2B which enables students to take a wide variety of subjects while specialising in one of the main engineering disciplines.
  • The Manufacturing Engineering Tripos (MET) Parts 1 and 2 which provides an integrated course in industrial engineering, including both operations and management

The other courses often taken by students who were admitted to read Engineering are Chemical Engineering, which is entered after the first year, and Management Studies, which is entered after the second year.

More details on the courses offered in the Cambridge University Engineering Department are contained in the department’s Undergraduate Prospectus which is available on-line at http://www.eng.cam.ac.uk/admissions/ and, on request, in printed or CD-ROM format from the Teaching Office, Cambridge University Engineering Department, Trumpington Street, Cambridge CB2 1PZ or the Jesus College Admissions Office.
