The Cambridge University Course

Chemical Engineering is a four-year course, leading to the degrees of BA and MEng. The course is taught by the Department of Chemical Engineering, which is independent of the Departments of Engineering and of Chemistry. Teaching starts in the second year, and is based thereafter in the Department. In the first year, students can choose to study Engineering, Natural Sciences (particularly Chemistry) or Computer Science with a Natural Science option. The varied entry routes reflect the nature of the discipline, which sits very much on the boundary between Molecular Science (Chemistry, Materials Science and Biotechnology) and Engineering.

There is no preferred entry route. At Jesus, almost equal numbers come through Natural Sciences and through Engineering; occasionally people take the 25% Computer Science option in first year Natural Sciences. Once you have decided to study Chemical Engineering at Cambridge, you have to decide which first year course you would prefer to study. You will then be considered alongside others applying to read that subject. There are on average between 2 and 4 Chemical Engineering students per year at Jesus. The College has a Fellow in Chemical Engineering and the subject is well catered for in the Quincentenary Library.

More information about the Chemical Engineering course, and the Department, can be found at its homepage (www.cheng.cam.ac.uk), by e-mail from admissions@cheng.cam.ac.uk, or by post from The Admissions Officer, Department of Chemical Engineering, Pembroke Street, Cambridge, CB2 3RA. The Department regularly appears top of The Times’ rankings of University Departments teaching the subject, and has a reputation as a friendly, dynamic centre.
