Dining

Food is of a good standard and reasonably priced. Formal Hall is a served, three-course meal, and demand is such that it is held five nights a week – more frequently than at many Colleges. This is an economical and enjoyable way to feed your friends. But if you really want to impress them, there are regular special guest nights. Our graduate students have their own Formal Hall in Upper Hall on Wednesday evenings.
In Formal Hall wearing of gowns is compulsory, and this, together with a Latin grace, makes it the only vestige of tradition which most students will experience until receiving their hard-earned degree. In fact, ‘tradition’ at Jesus is more relaxed than repressive, and no one has to stand in its shadow unwillingly.
For those who prefer informality, cafeteria midday and evening meals are served in Hall.
In common with students in almost all Cambridge Colleges, Jesus undergraduates pay a compulsory ‘Kitchen Fixed Charge’ (KFC) each term. The KFC is not something that can be avoided except for religious reasons or on medical grounds. After this charge has been levied, the cost of a meal is close to the cost price of the raw ingredients. In the cafeteria, there is always a choice of hot, cold and vegetarian dishes. Graduates are welcome to eat in Hall, but – because they don’t pay the KFC – at higher prices.
A branch of a well-known supermarket and an open-air market are within easy walking distance of the College, as are a wide range of restaurants and some excellent pub food.
