Students in Second Court

Jesus College is a hidden gem among Cambridge Colleges, with a reputation for friendliness and informality. It offers a stimulating intellectual environment not only through its excellent teaching but also through the support it gives to the arts, music and sport. The College promotes scholarship and enjoyment of the university experience by offering a range of bursaries, scholarships and opportunities to engage in the varied activities associated with College life.

We admit about 145 undergraduates and about 100 graduates a year, across all subjects studied in the University, with roughly equal numbers of arts and science students. We welcome applicants from all types of school and college, and considerable care is taken to ensure that each is considered for admission as an individual on their own merits. There is therefore a healthy mixture of students of all ages and from a wide variety of international backgrounds, Jesus also has over 60 active Fellows between them encompassing a wide range of expertise and specialist knowledge. They provide the basis for the academic supervision and support we offer, and thus contribute to the strong examination results achieved by our students.

Jesus College is a thriving community. Our Fellows and staff enjoy every opportunity to support and share in the academic and recreational interests of all our students throughout the year.

The College aims to encourage excellence in all walks of life:

  • Academic: Our award-winning Quincentenary Library and Computer Centre provide a superb working environment, open round the clock.
  • Artistic: The College is known for its strong support of the visual arts. We have an exceptional student art collection, as well as numerous contemporary sculptures in our grounds.
  • Musical: We have our own Director of Chapel Music who runs our two choirs. A wide variety of other musical activities, including an orchestra, swing band and gospel choir, are enthusiastically supported.
  • Sporting: Our boathouse is nearby, and within the College grounds are soccer, rugby and cricket pitches, as well as squash courts and excellent all-weather and grass tennis courts.

We strive to provide an open, tolerant and supportive environment in which students can pursue their academic and personal goals and ambitions to the best of their ability.

The College has a unique location and setting, making it a peaceful and spacious oasis in a bustling city. It contains the oldest, and some of the newest, college buildings in Cambridge. In other respects too, while valuing the past, it is thoroughly up-to-date, with an unusually wide range of facilities on site.

We are fortunate in having one of the largest main sites, with playing fields forming a ‘green belt’ around the College buildings. The feeling of pastoral tranquillity this creates is reinforced by the presence on the College boundary of Jesus Green, one of the city parks, and Midsummer Common, a large area of grass-covered common land leading down to the river.

Our buildings have been designed to take best advantage of this setting. Except for Cloister Court, which was inherited from the 12th century Benedictine convent that preceded the College on the site, all our courts have one open side to allow views of the beautiful surroundings.
